1. United Way
The nation's largest charity by donations received collected
$3.9 billion last year through its network of more than 1,300 regional
affiliates. Most of the fundraising came via paycheck deductions.
2. Salvation Army
Officially its own church but far better known for its charity
work, Salvation Army collected $1.7 billion. It provides relief services
in 120 countries.
3. Catholic Charities
The Alexandria, Va.-based umbrella organization of Catholic nonprofits received $1.6 billion in gifts.
4. Feeding America
Working through a network of 200 local food banks across the
country, Feeding America handled $1.1 billion in donations, mostly
foodstuff.
5. American Red Cross
Founded in 1881, the granddaddy of disaster relief agencies was the recipient of $950 million in private donations.
6. Food for the Poor
Based in Coconut Creek, Fla., Food for the Poor got $930 million
in gifts, mainly donated goods. The inventory was largely distributed
in the Caribbean and Latin America.
7. American Cancer Society
Based in Atlanta, the nation's largest single-illness charity took in $900 million in gifts.
8. World Vision
World Vision is an evangelical relief and development agency
that collected $850 million in cash and donated good. It is based in
Federal Way, Wash.
9. YMCA
Although its network of health clubs brought in enormous fees, the YMCA still received $825 million in gifts.
10. Goodwill Industries International
Goodwill received $780 million in donations, mostly used
clothing and goods to its network of thrift stores. The gifts fund job
training, employment placement and other community programs.
11. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
Founded in 1962 and located in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude received
$715 million in private donations. It is a pediatric treatment and
research facility focused on children's catasthropic diseases.
12. AmeriCares Foundation
AmeriCares got $665 million, much of it donated goods, to
support its mission of providing disaster relief around the world
13. Boys & Girls Club of America
Boys & Girls Club of America pulled in $660 million of gifts
toward its nationwide network of after-school care programs.
14. Habitat for Humanity International
Habitat for Humanity International received $620 million to support its mission of building homes for those in need.
15. Compassion International
Based in Colorado Springs, Compassion International is a Christian child sponsorship organization.
16. The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy received $505 million toward its efforts in 30 countries to preserve land and water.
17. United States Fund for UNICEF
The U.S. arm of the United Nations agency UNICEF collected $500
million in private donations for emergency relief efforts benefiting
children outside the U.S.
18. American Heart Association
The American Heart Association pulled in $495 million in gifts toward its fight against cardiovascular diseases.
19, Campus Crusade for Christ International
Operating at 1,140 colleges in the U.S., Campus Crusade for
Christ International received $475 million in private donations.
20. Feed the Children
A Christian-themed organization based in Oklahoma City, Feed The Children brought in $430 million in gifts.
21. Boy Scouts of America
Despite controversy over some of its practices, Boy Scouts of America took in $395 million of donations.
22. Samaritan's Purse
Samaritan's Purse, which is associated with Billy Graham,
received $375 million in gifts. It is a non-denominational evangelical
humanitarian organization operating in more than 100 countries.
23. Lutheran Services in America
Recipient of $365 million in gifts, Lutheran Services in America
is the umbrella organization for nearly 300 church health and human
services agencies
24. CARE USA
CARE USA attracted $360 million of gifts. The organization focuses on global poverty and emergency relief.
25. Save the Children Federation
Save the Children Federation got $350 million in donations
toward its mission of providing programs in health, nutrition, education
and emergency relief.
