NEW DELHI--India's federal government Monday said it will transfer
cash benefits for scholarships and welfare programs directly to the
recipients from Tuesday onwards, but added that the system won't
immediately cover subsidies on food, fuel and fertilizers.
The government needs to resolve some complex issues before these subsidies can be added to the cash transfer program, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters at a press conference. READ MORE
